What is a Minibar?

A minibar is a small, often absorption-cooled refrigeration cabinet used mainly in hotel and hospital rooms as well as student dormitories. It is designed to hold various beverages, chocolates, and similar food items, providing quiet and vibration-free cooling.

What to Consider When Purchasing a Mini Fridge?

In hotel and hospital establishments where minibars are used, energy costs are a significant concern. The minibar is the only product connected to electricity 24 hours a day in guest rooms. They work continuously to provide cold refreshments to customers at all times. Since minibars are among the most energy-consuming appliances at home, it’s beneficial for businesses to opt for models that consume less energy when purchasing minibars. Generally, there are minibar models available in the market ranging from Class D to A+ that consume less energy. Especially for hotel businesses, it’s essential to consider whether they operate as city hotels serving year-round or as holiday hotels or establishments catering to ski tourism.

If the business represents a sector with a seasonal operation of 6 months or less, they can opt for Absorption products with low investment costs but high operational costs, typically in Class D or C energy consumption. On the other hand, for city hotels providing accommodation throughout the year, they should prefer products with Class A+ or at least Class A energy consumption.

Compressor minibar models are mainly in demand in student dormitories and apartment hotel systems. These models have better cooling capacity compared to Absorption systems but are not highly preferred in starred hotels and private hospital establishments due to their noise during operation.

Access to technical support and sales team is crucial.

Since minibars are used by corporate service providers, it’s important to intervene in potential malfunctions without increasing complaints from end-users such as hotel and hospital customers. Therefore, choosing products from internationally recognized brands is emphasized.

Things to Consider When Using a Mini Fridge

  • The product user manual should be read carefully.
  • The product is suitable for use in airconditioned environments.
  • To achieve the desired performance from the product, the ambient temperature should be kept at a maximum of 32°C, even if the room is not airconditioned (inside the room/furniture cabinet).
  • If the product is used inside a furniture cabinet, it is essential for the furniture to have ventilation channels that allow for fresh air intake from the front and exhaust of warm air from the top.
  • The ambient temperature inside the furniture cabinet should be monitored as a priority. Especially in the summer months, it is frequently observed that the temperature exceeds 32°C in measurements taken inside furniture cabinets.
  • To achieve the desired performance from the product, it is imperative to ensure suitable ventilation conditions.
  • Unsuitable furniture cabinets and ambient temperatures will not allow the product to perform as expected.
  • When the product is used in unsuitable furniture cabinets and ambient temperatures, malfunctions may occur due to inappropriate environmental conditions, thereby shortening the product’s lifespan.

How Does a Peltier Mini Fridge Cool?

Thermoelectric (Peltier) coolers are semiconductor devices that function like small heat pumps. They consist of plates that heat up on one side and cool down on the other, operating on direct current and produced in various power levels depending on the direction of the current.

Metal-coated ceramic is used as the lateral plate to provide thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and mechanical strength.

In Peltier technology, the absence of moving parts eliminates unwanted elements such as noisy vibrations, wear and tear, and oil leakage, making it easy to control capacity and temperature by simply reducing or increasing the current intensity, which is a significant advantage.

Peltier system minibars are environmentally friendly as they do not contain any refrigerants.

The most significant feature of Peltier cooling technology is its 35% lower electricity consumption compared to absorption system coolers.

In Turkey, minibar production using Peltier technology was first realized with the ISM brand.

How Does an Absorption Mini Fridge Cool?

Mini fridges that operate by absorption cooling achieve cooling between +2/+8 degrees Celsius by being powered with 220 volts in an environment where the outside temperature ranges from 16 to 32 degrees Celsius. They work with a type of regeneration cycle that allows the same cooling substance to be used multiple times. To achieve the cooling cycle through absorption cooling principles, two elements that absorb each other and a prime gas for pressurization are used. This gas is ammonia. This pressurized mixture undergoes a phase change of ammonia gas within the system by heating with any heat source (electricity), resulting in cooling. Ammonia gas has zero impact on the ozone layer and global warming.

Due to the absence of moving parts within the absorption system minibar, it does not generate vibrations and operates at 0 dB noise level. In small living spaces like hotel rooms, having a cooling system that operates silently is crucial. With no moving parts, maintenance costs are minimized, ensuring long-lasting usage of these systems.

How Does a Compressor Mini Fridge Cool?

The operating principle of cooling systems relies entirely on heat transfer. In compressor minibars, the compressor’s role is to compress air to increase its pressure. The remaining heating and cooling processes continue in a cycle.

The refrigerant gas in the cooling system is compressed by the compressor. As the refrigerant is compressed, its temperature and pressure increase. The compressed refrigerant then moves from the compressor to the condenser. As the refrigerant gas passes through the condenser coil, heat is released to the surrounding environment because the ambient temperature is higher than the refrigerant’s temperature. As a result of heat transfer, the temperature of the refrigerant decreases. However, its pressure remains high, and it transitions into a liquid phase. The refrigerant then moves through the capillary tube. As it passes through the capillary tube, the pressure and evaporation temperature of the refrigerant decrease. The refrigerant, with its reduced pressure and evaporation temperature, absorbs heat from the air inside the minibar and from the beverages via air convection.

Hotel and hospital compressor minibars operate with R600A refrigerant gas. However, it’s known that R600A gas has explosive and flammable properties.

Compressor minibars, which operate on the same principle as household refrigerators, have a factory-set noise level of 38 dB. Our ears perceive sounds ranging from 0 to 140 dB, so hotel and hospital guests will hear the operating noise of the compressor minibar. In an environment where metal fatigue is also considered, the noise level of a compressor minibar that’s been in use for 2-3 years can reach up to 48 dB. Additionally, when operating 24 hours a day, the power consumption is 0.43 kW, achieving an A+ energy efficiency level.
